New Publication – Japanese Gay Men’s Experiences of Gender: Negotiating the Hetero System

My most recent publication has come out today in the Routledge Companion to Gender and Japanese Culture, edited by Jennifer Coates, Lucy Fraser and Mark Pendleton. Designed primarily as a teaching resource, my chapter is entitled Japanese Gay Men’s Experiences of Gender: Negotiating the Hetero System. It presents an English language summary of the thinking of seminal gay activist and cultural critic Fushimi Noriaki and then explores the tensions that emerge when Japanese gay men are faced with an ideological regime that pressures them to perform “hard” heteronormative masculinity.

The edited collection within which my chapter appears contains work by some of the most important scholars working on gender in Japanese studies. It’s expensive, but should be an excellent resource for teaching and research!

You can find a copy of my chapter here.
