East Asian Pornographies and Online Porn Cultures
Pornography’s impact on transnational models of media aesthetics and governance have been well documented from a Euro-American perspective. This special issue of Porn Studies will contribute to the field of pornography studies, however, by rethinking the cultural impact of pornography as audio-visual and online media from an East Asian perspective. The issue will specifically focus on pornographies made and consumed in and across Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. We would like to examine under-reported East Asian cultures of pornography, not only to uncover phenomena from within this region, but also to challenge and fine-tune existing academic research networks and paradigms. The overall aim of the special issue will thus be to think through how the lived experience of producing and consuming various pornographies throughout East Asia may extend, nuance, challenge, or even affirm the dominant Euro-American understandings of pornography that are becoming increasingly axiomatic within pornography studies as an emerging interdisciplinary field of study.
We are open to various disciplinary and academic approaches in this fairly novel field of studies, but overall would like to encourage ethnographic or reception studies of pornography that focus on porn fandoms, consumers, audiences as well as cultural impact. Whilst we are also open to proposals that engage with the textual/filmic/cultural analyses of East Asian pornographic content, we particularly invite papers that synthesize such analyses within a broader study of the reception and/or consumption of pornography throughout East Asia. Reflexive pieces engaging with the challenges of doing pornography studies within an East Asian context are also warmly welcomed.
We are specifically looking for contributions on the following topics:
- Japanese porn cultures in East Asia
- Sinophone porn cultures in East Asia
- East Asian celebrities and fandoms
- East Asian porn in “the West”
- Indie and DIY porn cultures
- Porn and social media platforms
- Hardcore manga/manhua/manhwa and anime
- Pornography and higher education
- Porn celebrities and porn scandals
- Normative audiences and the shifting gaze
- Porn liberties and regulations
- East Asian porn wars
- Pornography and feminist debates
- Female-oriented, queer, and alternative industries
